In 2021, Open Arms Outreach Organization Inc. launched a major empowerment campaign in Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State, tagged the “Ngor Okpala Free Skills Empowerment Programme.” The event was hosted in Umuneke Community, the LGA headquarters, and drew participants from different wards and villages within the local government.
The goal of the project was to empower youths, women, widows, and jobseekers with practical skills they could immediately apply to earn income and become self-reliant.
Despite the success and high turnout, the landmass and spread of Ngor Okpala made it clear that not all communities were reached, highlighting the urgent need for a follow-up phase.
Purpose of the Programme:
- To equip participants with practical, income-generating skills
- To combat unemployment among rural youth and women
- To empower widows and vulnerable individuals with tools for self-sustenance
- To promote economic inclusion and community development
Skills Offered:
Participants were trained in several valuable skills, including:
- Tailoring & Fashion Design
- Hairdressing & Braiding
- Baking & Confectionery
- Soap & Detergent Making
- Beads & Craft Work
- Paint Making/ Production
Community Turnout and Impact:
- Hundreds of people from various parts of Ngor Okpala participated and benefited from the programme
- Many attendees have since started small-scale businesses or apprenticeships
- Widows and young people testified that the training gave them hope and direction
- Local leaders expressed joy and called for more follow-up programmes
Challenges and Next Steps:
Due to the large land area and population of Ngor Okpala, several communities could not be reached during this first phase. As an organization committed to inclusion, Open Arms Outreach Organization Inc. recognizes the need to return and extend the training to these untouched areas.
Plans are already in motion for a second outreach to ensure no community is left behind.
